Environmental Leadership

Personal leadership and planning for life applied to environmental leadership and sustainable agriculture.

Be the change you want to see in the world.
To do this, you must first change yourself.*

* “Be the change you wish to see in the world” (or something similar) is often attributed to the famous Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi. However, as the excellent Quote Investigator relates:

…It turns out there is no reliable documentary evidence for the quotation. The closest verifiable remark we have is this:

“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.”

Sample Material for Teachers and Presenters

This new page holds the Environmental Leadership content sustainability consultant Kyle Crider is developing in partnership with Dr. David Dyson and Life Leaders. In order of most recent material presented, below you will find handouts for events, which you may wish to adapt for your own personal use, classroom instruction, or presentation:

  • Environmental Leadership at University of Montevallo Environmental Studies (ES 200 “Environment and Society” classes)
  • Environmental Leadership at Montevallo GEAR UP Earth and Sky Camp (Summer, 2018)

This material is based Life Leaders’ Plan for School and 7 Areas of Life and Best-Self Leadership programs. For additional resources, see our Planbooks page.

Environmental Leadership at
University of Montevallo Environmental Studies

The second implementation of this material was for University of Montevallo’s Environmental Studies (and other) students taking Dr Susan Caplow’s and Professor Kyle Crider’s “Environment and Society” course. Dr. Dyson was invited to speak on his implementation of environmental leadership practices via his Triple D Ranch and Farm in Calera, Alabama. He shared the following plan resource with students:

Environmental Leadership at
Montevallo GEAR UP Earth and Sky Camp

The first draft of this new material was presented to high school students at the GEAR UP 2018 Earth and Sky Camp at the University of Montevallo and included the following resources:

“There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth.
We are all crew.” ~Marshall McLuhan

Using a spaceship earth metaphor, Life Leaders’ environmental leadership lessons emphasize the need for environmental course corrections for our planet that begin with course corrections in our daily lives. These personal course corrections are, of course, strongly tied to Life Leaders’ emphasis on Plan for School and Life and Best-Self Leadership by building character, competence, and commitment to be great citizens.
